What are Early Literacy Skills?

  • 1. Print Awareness- print is all around us- difference between print and pictures; you can read the pictures
  • 2. Phonological Awareness- Sound awareness in oral language
  • 3. Alphabet /Letter Knowledge and Letter /Sound relationships
  • 4. Comprehension Skills- basic strategies in comprehending written words
  • 5. Vocabulary and Language development- word and concept meanings
  • 6. Written Language- we write to tell a story, we write what we think and feel, we write to understand, we write to teach, to write to learn
  • 7. Won’t they learn all this in school?
  • 8. How can we teach all of these; after all we are not teachers in school? Caregivers can demonstrate these during playtime using books, games, and fun filled activities
